What happens when we put separate narratives in conversation? Kathleen Watt, opera singer-turned-surgical patient when osteosarcoma invaded her jaw, compares notes with Claire Unis, author of a memoir about becoming a doctor without losing her humanity. Participants will be invited to consider writing (or rewriting) their stories from the perspective of someone else who was present, noticing how that exercise changes and enriches them. The resulting discussions will bring Narrative Medicine to life!
Facilitators
Claire Unis MD MFA is a pediatrician and author of a memoir about drawing on diverse experiences in the process of becoming a doctor. She facilitates writing workshops, narrative medicine sessions, and discussions of literature for her medical group in northern California, where she lives with her family, two dogs, two donkeys, a horse, and 6 chickens.
